WATCH: Mikhail Red's horror film 'Lilim' drops teaser
Horror movie Lilim, directed by Mikhail Red, released a teaser through Variety, giving fans a sneak peek into the much-anticipated film.
According to the media outlet, this film represents Red's comeback in the horror genre following the triumph of the Filipino horror hit Deleter and the soon-to-come Nokturno starring Nadine Lustre.
The story revolves around a brother and sister seeking safety in a secluded orphanage during social turmoil and unexplained disappearances against the backdrop of the volatile era of the country in the 1970s and 1980s.
As the siblings find shelter, they soon realize it is far from a safe place as they discover a group doing dark cult practices and encounter an ancient evil.
The film will feature a star-studded line-up, including Heaven Peralejo (Issa), Eula Valdez, Mon Confiado, and Ryza Cenon, who recently made waves on social media as she shaved her head completely for the role.
In an interview with Variety, Red revealed that he wanted to approach the film as one that narrates a secret community hiding from the increasing oppression during that time but ultimately collapsing and being harmed by their own beliefs.
"I wanted to make a film about a hidden society sheltering from the encroaching oppression of the times, only to collapse and fall victim to their own beliefs, a society shackled by fear and by fanaticism, mirroring the very world it tries to escape," Red told the entertainment outlet, adding that Lilim is his first horror film "seen through the eyes of children."
"Lilim is a bigger and more ambitious production compared to Deleter and Nokturno, with more complex sequences, perspectives and characters, production was quite challenging for us being a period set film.
The film is also Red's first collaboration with his father, Raymond Red, one of the pioneer figures of modern Filipino alternative cinema. The latter is known as the first Filipino to have won the prestigious Palme D'Or Award at the 2000 Cannes International Film Festival for his short film Anino. On the other hand, his brother, Nikolas Red, penned Lilim's screenplay.
Further details, such as the film's premiere date, are yet to be announced.
