‘Where will she crash land?’: A U.S. remake of ‘Crash Landing on You’ is currently in the works, and fans are furious

The popular K-drama Crash Landing on You starring Hyun Bin and Son Yejin is reportedly getting an American spinoff, and it has earned the ire of fans on social media.

Crash Landing on You tells the story of businesswoman and heiress Yoon Seri (Son Yejin) who comes from South Korea. Seri was testing her sportswear line when she paraglides—or “crash lands”—into North Korea and crosses paths with Captain Ri Jeonghyeok (Hyun Bin).

In a report from Korean media outlet Edaily, Studio Dragon CEO Kang Chulku announced that the U.S. remake of Crash Landing on You is in the “final stages of planning and development with Netflix U.S.” in a press conference with entertainment company CJ ENM. Studio Dragon is the production company behind the K-drama.

Since the series centers around the decades-long rift between South Korea and North Korea, the setting of the remake will be tricky. Many K-drama fans expressed their concern on social media as they wondered how the actual “crash landing” will happen.

Twitter user @nancywyuen said the American remake “makes no sense” given the setting of South and North Korea.

@doruntina2208 wondered where the American counterpart of Yoon Seri is going to “crash” on.

Several K-drama fans seconded @dorutina2208’s concern, as they expressed their concern on where Seri will “crash land.”

Meanwhile, @tanayj joked said the female lead will “paraglide from the US and crash land in the dangerous territory of Canada.”

Twitter user @RockBisonMMXX said the remake makes “zero sense.” “People will read subtitles. Will it have ‘name’ actors who speak English????  But most of the series success, IMHO, is the actors' chemistry.”

@AmLiRa7 criticized the upcoming remake, noting the K-drama is “unique” because of its storyline and the acting abilities of Hyun Bin and Son Yejin.

@BINJINHEAVEN said the American remake “cannot replicate the lightning in a bottle Crash Landing on You achieved.”

Twitter user @jhopediaries responded to the remake by referencing Parasite director Bong Joonho’s speech at the Golden Globes.

@jamadoria said “no remake will ever come close” to the original K-drama. “The US needs to adapt any number of amazing romance books into films/tv & leave classics alone.”

A change.org petition calling for the cancellation of the remake can also be found where 124 people have signed, as of this writing.

In a Soompi report, Crash Landing on You made history as the highest-rated series on the Korean cable network tvN.
