LG transparent Smart Bed TV and 'Rollable' phone revealed at CES 2021

A transparent television that rises from the foot of your bed and a rollable phone with an expandable display were among the new tech products unveiled by LG at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021 virtual experience this week.

55-inch OLED Smart Bed

The manufacturer describes its 55-inch Transparent OLED Smart Bed as a way to clear up that wall space. Cuddle up and stay in for movie nights with the entire display popping out from the foot of the bed. 

The screen is 40 percent transparent, allowing you to see what else is going on in the room.

When not in use, the TV set can be rolled out just a little to display the date, time, and weather. 

The incredibly compact TV is built into a frame that’s designed to sit at the foot of a bed. The TV rises out of the frame at the push of a button. Cinematic speakers are built into the frame, removing the need for additional surround speakers.

The whole panel can also be easily moved to other parts of the house, maximizing the use of space. 

Aside from being the ultimate luxury home theatre system for couch potatoes everywhere, LG actually sees multiple uses for that transparent TV including in commercial settings like restaurants and subways.

The transparent OLED display can work in restaurants, where diners can view the menu and select their food via the screen, while still being able to see the restaurant or chefs behind it.

The screen also doubles as a barrier, which fits into the whole pandemic dining experience.

Another possible use is the replacement of traditional subway windows with the 55-inch transparent OLED display, allowing commuters to view maps, and useful information on the screen while also being able to see through the display outside.

Rollable smart phone

Meanwhile, the "Rollable" smartphone has a display that extends upward to create a larger, more tablet-like screen. 

The LG Rollable has what the company calls a “unique resizable screen” that extends from a phone into a small tablet display. The screen slides in and out of place to provide a bigger screen area, similar to how its rollable OLED televisions work but on a smaller scale.

The device will use a flexible BOE-developed OLED display that expands from the casing, letting users expand the screen without any folding mechanisms.

Users can still have the compact design while having the ability to expand the size of devices if they deem it necessary, making the gadget more versatile for business and entertainment uses.

While this kind of tech integration in bedrooms and smartphones looks like something out of futuristic sci-fi flicks, this kind of technology could be the standard in a matter of years.

No specific date or pricing details were announced for the products, though LG has confirmed that the rollable phone will be available in 2021.
