Voice actor confirms sequel release date
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 release date confirmed
The release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been confirmed by none other than Sonic voice actor Ben Schwartz.
In a tweet yesterday, Schwartz posted a video of himself on a very slow moving walkway with a billboard for Sonic the Hedgehog in the background. The text on his tweet reads: "SONIC 2 IS OFFICIALLY COMING 2 THEATERS 4/8/22!!!"
Sonic the Hedgehog grossed over $300 million in the box office when it released in February, so a sequel was not out of the question. In May, news of a follow-up movie broke with the original cast and crew returning.
It can be recalled that the original film had one of the most turbulent starts of any film based on a video game property. When the launch trailer released in April 2019, there was a huge fan backlash against the design of the Sonic character. The feedback was so negative that the filmmakers decided to push back the movie's release by three months in order to create a redesign of the character.
The new Sonic design adhered to its video game roots and was, finally, widely accepted by fans. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 speeds into theaters on April 8, 2022.
