John Cena's 'naked' apperance, Ryan Gosling's 'Kenough' performance, and other 2024 Oscars highlights
The 2024 Academy Awards or Oscars had its fair share of memorable moments on stage.
These aren't only limited to the expected or surprising wins of the past year's best movies, but also hilarious appearances, performances, and statements from the celebrities.
Here are the highlights of the movie industry's biggest night held at the Dolby Digital Theater in Los Angeles on March 11, Philippine time.
Jimmy Kimmel roasts crowd who ‘didn’t vote for’ Greta Gerwig
Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars awarding ceremony for the fourth time.
In his opening monologue, he addressed the elephant in the room: the non-nomination of Barbie actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig.
“Barbie was a monster hit. What an achievement to take a plastic doll nobody even liked anymore,” Kimmel said. “Now, Barbie’s a feminist icon thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to be nominated for best director.”
“I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her, by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this,” he told the Academy.
Anatomy of a Fall dog Messi attends ceremony
The border collie Messi from the legal drama Anatomy of a Fall took his seat at the Oscars ceremony.
Messi, a seven-year-old border collie, portrayed the family dog Snoop.
Kimmel gave Messi a shout-out in his opening monologue, saying he "may have given the performance of the year."
The Academy’s official Facebook page shared a photo of him, noting that he’s a VIP (Very Important Pup).
Anatomy of a Fall won best original screenplay.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt give ‘Barbenheimer’ banter
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who respectively appeared at Barbie and Oppenheimer which became the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, presented a special tribute to stunt performers.
While on stage, Gosling and Blunt couldn’t help but talk about their movies’ supposed rivalry and throw shade at each other.
“I’m just happy that we can finally put this ‘Barbenheimer’ rivalry aside,” Gosling told Blunt, to which she replied, “The way this award season has turned out, it wasn’t that much of a rivalry. Just let it go!”
But Gosling had more tricks up his sleeve.
“I think I kind of figured out why it’s called ‘Barbenheimer’ and not ‘Oppenarbie,’” he said. “You’re on the tail end because you rode ‘Barbie’s’ coattails all summer.”
“Thanks for Kens-plaining that to me, all right,” Blunt replied.
John Cena presents best costume design… without a costume
Wrestler actor John Cena served as the presenter for best costume design but ironically, he seemed to not have any costume.
Cena appeared seemingly nude, only covering his crotch with the envelope containing the winner’s name.
After some banter with Kimmel, the lights went off for a while and when it came back, Cena was already wearing a golden, curtain-like toga.
The best costume design went to sci-fi drama Poor Things.
Cena had a cameo in Barbie, which was a nominee for best picture.
Emma Stone misses Poor Things wins after going to the bathroom
Poor Things won three Oscars in a row—best makeup and hairstyle, best production design, and best costume design—but its star Emma Stone missed everything as she went for a bathroom break after the performance of Billie Eilish.
Stone instead saw her movie’s wins on a monitor from the first floor.
She went on to win best actress later on—and she didn’t miss it anymore.
Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken performance
Ryan Gosling’s much-awaited performance of Barbie’s original track I’m Just Ken showed that he’s more than “Kenough.”
After the commercial break, Gosling sang the first few lines while in his seat as his hat was covering his face. He then walked to the stage to perform with other Kens.
Toward the end, Slash of Guns N’ Roses made a surprise appearance even as everybody sang while the lyrics flashed on screen.
Jimmy Kimmel reads Donald Trump's hate post against him
At the tail-end of the program, Kimmel made sure that he'd address a hate post against him: the one from former president Donald Trump.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump rhetorically asked if there's ever been a "worse host" than Kimmel.
"His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be," Trump said. "Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC 'talent,' George Slopanopoulos."
The embattled politician and businessman, who's facing 91 criminal offenses in four criminal cases, noted Slopanopoulos "would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous."
He also called the awarding ceremony a "really bad politically correct show" and, for years, "Disjointed, boring, and very unfair."
"Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them," Trump said. "Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
After Kimmel read aloud Trump's sentiments, he gave a short response: "Isn't it past your jail time?"
