Naomi Osaka spoke about her cultural roots, the pressure she experiences as a world-renowned athlete, and standing up against violence in the trailer of her upcoming documentary series, Naomi Osaka, on Netflix.

The three-part series will cover Osaka, 23, as she “explores her cultural roots and navigates her multifaceted identity as a tennis champ and rising leader,” the synopsis read, covering the 2018 US Open—where she won her first Grand Slam title—and her preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I always had this pressure to keep this squeaky image but now I don’t care what anyone has to say,” Osaka said in the trailer. “What am I if I’m not a good tennis player,” the four-time Grand Slam title winner added.

Recently, Osaka has been speaking more about her mental health and racial violence.

Osaka stood up for the Black community, joining a protest in Minneapolis following the killing of George Floyd. Last August, after initially withdrawing from the Western and Southern Open semifinals to pause for the killing of Jacob Blake, Osaka wore face masks over the course of her matches with names of people who have been killed due to racial violence.

In May, the highest-paid female athlete withdrew from the 2021 French Open following her decision not to attend the press conferences and was fined $15,000. Osaka then spoke about dealing with social anxiety and depression on Twitter.

Last month, Osaka withdrew from Wimbledon, citing taking personal time off with family and friends but Osaka will play for Japan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Naomi Osaka, helmed by Oscar-nominated director Garrett Bradley, is slated for a July 16 release on Netflix.
