‘Red Notice’ gets two sequels with Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson set to return - report
Netflix’s globe-trotting, action-comedy heist movie Red Notice is reportedly getting two sequels.
The movie’s original stars Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson are expected to return, along with director Rawson Marshall Thurber.
Deadline reports that production on the sequels is expected to begin in early 2023 with the two movies filming back-to-back.
The 2021 blockbuster hit film stars Dwayne Johnson as Agent Hartley, an FBI profiler who reluctantly teams up with a renowned art thief Nolan Booth, played by Ryan Reynolds in order to catch an even more notorious criminal Bishop, played by Gal Gadot.
According to the exclusive Deadline report, production schedules are still dependent on the availability of the main actors busy schedules, as all three have commitments to major superhero franchises.
Following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, a third Deadpool movie is in the works at Marvel Studios, with Reynolds reprising his role as Wade Wilson.
Johnson stars as the lead in DC’s Black Adam, the eleventh film in the DCEU, which is expected to debut in 2022.
Gadot is getting her third solo outing as Diana Prince, with director Patty Jenkins in Wonder Woman 3 and has signed on to other big projects, like Disney's live-action Snow White movie.
While Netflix has not confirmed the plans for Red Notice’s sequels, sources told Deadline that the plan is to bring back the star trio and add new characters to flesh out a heist ensemble reminiscent of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise.
Released globally on November 2021, Red Notice broke Netflix records and is currently the platform's biggest movie of all time, with a total of 364 million hours viewed in its first 28 days on Netflix.
Red Notice was also the most expensive movie the streamer has ever produced, with an estimated budget of around $200 million.
The blockbuster heist film is the latest Netflix original film to be turned into a franchise, following in the footsteps of Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction and Charlize Theron’s The Old Guard, both of which are also getting follow-ups.
