Gaming on wheels: Sony and Honda are planning to put a PS5 into their electric car

To compete with Tesla, Sony and Honda are planning to beef up their electric car with a premium entertainment system complete with music, movies, and a PlayStation 5.

In an interview with Financial Times, Sony Honda Mobility president and COO Izumi Kawanishi revealed that integrating the next-gen console in a car is "technologically possible."

"Sony has content, services, and entertainment that move people. We are adapting these assets to mobility, and this is our strength against Tesla," Kawanishi said. "Tesla is not providing any content services."

The two Japanese companies are planning to launch their first electric vehicle in North America by 2025.

Apart from Tesla, the Sony-Honda car also aims to compete with Google and Apple's upcoming software-focused vehicles. The latter tech giant has been rumored to be working on a fully autonomous self-driving car, titled Project Titan, equipped with an in-house chipset.

Sony and Honda are also planning to make advancements in autonomous driving with their own EV. "To enjoy the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don't need to drive. The solution for this is autonomous driving," Kawanishi said. "Autonomous driving will have to evolve considerably from the current level to get to that point, and it will take time for that to happen."

Currently, Tesla owners are able to play games in their vehicles, too. Titles such as the 1991 classic Sonic the Hedgehog and The Witcher 3 are playable in some models. The Musk-owned car company is also working with Steam to equip its cars with a video game library.
