‘Doge’ breaks NFT meme record after selling for $4 million or P191 million
Such wow. Much NFT.
Just when you thought the crazy NFT prices couldn’t get any crazier, the iconic surprised “Doge” meme has come to surprise us back to the tune of $4 million, making it the most expensive NFT meme in history.
The meme was sold by dog owner Atsuko Sato. The image sees her rescued Shiba Inu named Kabosu looking sideways and puzzled at the camera before she nabs at the person in front of her.
The auction winner by the username of @pleasrdao placed the final bid of 1,696.9 through the cryptocurrency Ethereum, as it's worth approximately $4 million when converted.
In case you didn’t know, NFTs are non-fungible tokens that certify online content being owned by an individual through blockchain, a digital ledger where the record of ownership is stored. NFTs aren’t exchangeable thus the value would likely remain the same or even higher in the years to come.
“I took the photos to update my blog,” Sato had shared on the iconic photoset. “I take a lot of pictures every day, so that day was nothing out of the ordinary. Kabosu loves having her photo taken, so she was delighted to have the camera pointed towards her.”
From there, the photo took flight through Reddit and gained momentum as one of the most shared images of the early 2010s, as people started to insert Kabosu into just about any relatable life moment.
Kabosu’s image is now most associated with the cryptocurrency “Dogecoin,” which was famously backed by Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk.
Sato once shared that she only “hopes Kabosu and Doge will continue to bring happiness and joy to people around the world for years to come.” Not only have they achieved that feat, but they’ve also now got $4 million to boot with portions of the proceeds going to charities Japanese Red Cross and humanitarian organization World Food Programme.
Meanwhile, other memes that have been sold as NFTs include the Overly Attached Girlfriend ($411,000) Charlie Bit My Finger ($761,000), Disaster Girl ($500,000), and much more.
