‘Squid Game’ creator in talks with Netflix for possible third season
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that he’s in talks with Netflix not just for a second season, but a potential third season as well.
"I'm in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3," Hwang said in an online interview Tuesday (Dec. 28) with Korean broadcaster KBS (via Korea JoongAng Daily). "We will come to a conclusion any time soon."
“We are aware that everyone is waiting [for the next season to come out] so we’re all trying to think positively about the creation of the next season,” Hwang added.
It’s the first time that the director-writer has hinted at the possibility of a third season of the biggest Netflix original series after confirming plans were in place for a second season in a media interview last month.
Squid Game, the dystopian South Korean series that focuses on cash-strapped individuals competing in deadly versions of children’s games for a big cash prize, took the world by storm when it debuted on Netflix in September this year.
Season one of the series ended on a cliffhanger note, with Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, seemingly on a mission to uncover the mystery of the people behind the games instead of boarding a plane to reunite with his daughter.
In previous media interviews, Hwang said that the police angle was something he was possibly interested in exploring further in the second season.
"So there's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice," Hwang told AP in November. "But I will say indeed there will be a second season."
“It’s in my head right now,” Hwang said adding that he was currently in the planning process. “But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.”

More recently, the director said the next season will feature the story of Gi-hun, the final winner of the deadly contest of heavily debt-ridden people to win 45.6 billion won in prize money.
“It will be centered about Seong Gi-hun,” he recently revealed to Korean broadcaster KBS. “The overall narrative will center around the people Gi-hun meets, and the people that he will be chasing after.”
Since its official release on Sept. 17, Squid Game has swept Netflix's top popular charts across the world, reaching the No. 1 spots in more than 90 countries where the streaming service is available.
It also became the most-watched Netflix content of all time, with a total of 1.65 billion hours of streaming in the first four weeks of release.
Squid Game has earned a number of television awards and nominations in prestigious awards shows in the United States, including the Gotham Awards and the Golden Globes for Best Television Series in the Drama category.
