Sony confirms next-gen PlayStation VR2 and exclusive ‘Horizon: Call of the Mountain’ game
Sony has confirmed the name of its next-gen Virtual Reality headset, the PlayStation VR2 and announced that a brand new immersive Horizon VR game is in the works.
Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan made the announcements as part of Sony’s CES 2022 presentation Tuesday (Jan. 5).
While Sony execs have not revealed what the next-gen headset will look like, they did reveal some technical specs and details of the PS VR2 which will work with the PlayStation 5. Sony previously detailed the next-gen controllers—now officially named Sense controllers—back in March.
Users can expect new sensory features, enhanced controls tracking and upgraded visual fidelity in the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, which builds on technologies that are currently found on the PS5's DualSense wireless controller.
The headset supports haptic feedback, eye tracking, 4K HDR, 90/120Hz frame rates, foveated rendering, and a field of view of 110 degrees, and it connects to the PS5 with a single USB-C cable.
"All of this is on top of the new PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers which enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way," explained Ryan.
During Sony's presentation at CES 2022, Ryan also unveiled the first big new exclusive title for PSVR2, a unique experience built on Aloy’s Horizon world, called Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerilla Games and Firesprite Studios
The VR Horizon game will follow the release of Horizon Forbidden West, one of the most highly-anticipated video game releases for 2022, which is currently set for a Feb. 18 launch next month.
“As you join Aloy on her journey into the Forbidden West, it’s great to know that this is not the final frontier of the world of Horizon. In fact, it’s only the beginning,” said Jan-Bart Van Beek, studio director for Guerilla Games in the game's teaser trailer.
“Our teams have also been working on a brand new game set in the world of Horizon which we are very proud to announce. We’re creating a unique new Horizon experience, one that has been built from the ground up for PlayStation’s next-gen VR hardware.”
Van Beek added that the game has been designed to push gameplay technology and hardware innovation and will make the most of the visual experience and brand-new controllers allowing players to interact and immerse in the world of Horizon in a whole new way.
