Samsung after iPhone 12 reveal: ‘Charger included with your Galaxy’

Apple recently unveiled four new flagship offerings in various shapes and sizes under its long-awaited 5G-enabled iPhone 12 lineup.

But unlike Apple’s previous devices, the latest batch of iPhones will ship later this month without a charging adapter and the wired EarBuds. The tech giant said that the decision is aimed to reduce the company’s carbon emissions as well as the use of precious materials.

“Customers already have over 700 million Lightning headphones and many customers have moved to a wireless experience,” Apple VP for environment Lisa Jackson said during the online event. “And there are also over two billion Apple power adapters out in the world and that’s not counting the billions of third-party adapters. So we are removing these items from the iPhone box.”

After Apple’s announcement, Samsung appeared to have taken a playful jab at its competition after posting a photo of its charger along with a text that reads "Included with your Galaxy."

“Your #Galaxy does give you what you are looking for. From the most basic as a charger, to the best camera, battery, Performance, memory and even 120Hz screen on a smartphone,” the caption read.

However, several media outfits previously cited a news report by Korean news site ETNews which claimed that Samsung is planning to exclude chargers from some of its devices starting next year.

“Samsung Electronics is pushing ahead with a plan to exclude chargers from smartphone components,” the report read. “The fact that smartphone chargers have become widespread and cost reduction is the background.”

It furthered: “Samsung Electronics is considering removing the charger from smartphone components with partners. The detailed timing and method have not been confirmed, but it is known that Samsung is planning to exclude chargers from some models to be released next year.”

The Korean site claimed that the reason behind the alleged move by the company is due to cost reduction.

“Samsung Electronics began to discuss ways to exclude chargers as it was determined that chargers were sufficiently popular,” it said. “Along with this, it is the industry’s pool that the cost of reduction to offset the ever-increasing smartphone prices due to the support of 5G mobile communication was a reason.”
