Netflix's 'The Sandman' cast finally revealed
Netflix officially revealed on Friday the main cast for its upcoming TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's epic dark fantasy graphic novel The Sandman.
The streaming giant announced on Twitter that Tom Sturridge (Velvet Buzzsaw) will be playing the titular role of Morpheus, also known as the Lord of the Dreaming. Gwendoline Christie, best known in Game of Thrones and Star Wars trilogy, will co-star as Lucifer Morningstar, the Ruler of Hell.
Charles Dance, another Game of Thrones alumnus, will star as Roderick Burgess, described as a charlatan, magician, and blackmailer. Vivienne Acheampong, meanwhile, will play as Morpheus' librarian in the Dreaming - Lucienne. They will be joined by Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain and Asim Chaudhry as Abel.
Other notable characters in the comic series including John Constantine, Rose Walker, Unity Kinkaid as well as the rest of the Endless siblings such as Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Delirium and Despair have yet to be revealed.
Several attempts have been made to adapt Gaiman's Sandman into a film since the 1990s. Before the series landed on Netflix in 2019, Joseph Gordon Levitt was initially attached to star and direct in a film adaptation. However, he eventually left the project because of creative differences.
“For the last thirty-three years, the ‘Sandman’ characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I’m unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality," Gaiman said in a statement. I can’t wait until the people out there get to see what we’ve been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there."
For those who are new to Gaiman's masterpiece, Netflix describes the upcoming adaptation as a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven. The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic and human mistakes he's made during his vast existence.
Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy) will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the project alongside Gaiman and David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Krypton, Foundation).
A release date for Netflix's 11-episode series is yet to be announced.
