Godzilla vs. King Kong movie coming soon, likely headed to streaming release

Published Nov 27, 2020 4:38 am

Godzilla and King Kong are two of the most iconic beasts to ever grace the world of comics, television and film. In their own separate film franchises, they battled other monsters and the futile efforts of humanity to drive them into extinction.

Now, imagine an epic battle involving these two massive creatures, each unleashing its own ferocity toward the other. Who would you be rooting for?

Reports have surfaced that a Godzilla vs. King Kong movie is coming soon and that two powerful media entities are fighting for the rights to release the film internationally.

Entertainment website Deadline has just revealed that Netflix made a $200M offer to release the movie in the streaming service. But Warner Media blocked it and is now in talks with Legendary to take the feature film to rival streamer HBO Max. Warner has a 25 percent stake in the movie, while Legendary has 75 percent.

Should the deal with HBO Max prove successful, the upcoming Godzilla vs. King Kong film will have a streaming release as well as a theatrical premiere component, similar to the studio’s experiment with Wonder Woman 1984.

The report also quoted a Warner Bros. spokesperson saying, “We plan to release Godzilla vs. King Kong theatrically next year as scheduled.” The tentative date being eyed falls on May 21, 2021, the frame before Memorial Day weekend in the US.

Monster flicks have been a major cash machine for Legendary, earning well in the box office. Godzilla (2004) netted $524.9M, Kong: Skull Island (2017) hauled $566.6M, while Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019) churned $386.6M. In the Chinese box office, all three grossed a combined $1.478 billion.

The upcoming Godzilla vs. King Kong is the fourth film in Legendary’s "Monster Universe."

Here’s a quick synopsis:

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will set the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages.
