Better late than never: WhatsApp is getting emoji reactions in chat

Published May 05, 2022 7:48 pm

Meta's WhatsApp is finally getting emoji reactions, announced CEO Mark Zuckerberg on May 5.

The upcoming feature will let users express their feelings toward a message without needing to send an individual emoji as a separate message.

WhatsApp is a little late to the react party messaging platforms like Messenger, Instagram's Direct Messages, Twitter's Direct Messages, Telegram, Slack, and iMessage have had this feature for the past couple of years.

According to WhatsApp head Will Cathcart, the first reactions coming to the app are 👍❤️😂😮😢🙏 . All the other emojis and skin tones will come soon, too.

To react to a chat, you have to press and hold the message you want to react to. A pop-up will appear, allowing you to choose from the six emojis above. Your reaction will appear below the message you selected.

As of writing, the reactions feature isn't available yet on WhatsApp for iOS and Android in the Philippines.

Alongside the emoji reactions, WhatsApp's latest update will allow users to share larger files of up to 2GB at a time and conduct 32-person group conference calls.
