NBC ‘standing by’ for potential ‘The Office’ reboot
An NBCUniversal executive revealed that a reboot of the beloved sitcom The Office is within the realm of possibility.
Speaking to Deadline during a panel session at the Edinburgh International TV Festival, NBCU content chief Susan Rovner said that the decision to do a reboot of the Steve Carrell-led sitcom is up to The Office showrunner Greg Daniels, who developed the US version of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's iconic British sitcom.
"Whenever Greg Daniels wants to do one, we're standing by," Rovner said after initially saying "no comment."
Although a revival of the show is not officially in development, Daniels told Collider last January that a reboot of The Office is "not impossible."
“No, but it’s not impossible. It’s not impossible for sure. I would want to be involved, and I’ve got two other shows I’m working on right now," Daniels said.
The Office ran from 2005 to 2013 for a total of nine seasons. Several years later, the NBC sitcom became the top streamed show in 2020 on Netflix with a total of 57 billion minutes streamed in the United States. All nine seasons of the comedy show departed the streaming giant on Dec. 31, 2020 and moved to NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service.
The Office starred Carell (Michael Scott), Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute), John Krasinksi (Jim Halpert), Jenna Fischer (Pam Beesly), Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin), Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor), B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard), Brian Baumgartner (Kevin Malone), Ed Helms (Andy Bernard), Creed Tratton, Phyllis Smith, Oscar Nunez, Kate Flannery (Meredith), Leslie David Baker (Stanley Hudson, Ellie Kemper (Erin), Paul Lieberstein (Toby Flenderson), Craig Robinson (Daryl Philbin), and Melora Hardin (Jan Levinson).
