Minecraft to add PlayStation VR support this month
Mojang Studios has just confirmed what fans have been clamoring for quite a while – Minecraft will soon be playable in PlayStation VR. How soon? Later this month.
In a recent post on the official PlayStation blog, Mojang Studios announced that Minecraft, the ever-popular world-building game, will be getting a free upgrade later this month that will allow it to be played in Sony’s VR hardware.
“Once we’ve finished the final bits of polish to the experience, the PS VR support will arrive via a patch for the main Minecraft game. Everyone who has Minecraft on PlayStation 4 will get that patch automatically. Download that patch and you’ll get access to the new Minecraft VR functionality. Of course, you’ll need a PS VR setup in order to use it,” Mojang Studios said in the post.
“Just like the main game, you use your DualShock 4 controller to move around and do all the crafting and choppy/fighty things that you need to do, but you’ll be fully immersed in your Minecraft world.,” the company said.
Apart from confirming the update, the game developer said that there will be two main ways to play the game in VR: Immersive and Living Room modes, as well as a bunch of new settings and guidance so players can tweak the VR experience to their needs. Mojang did not specify further details.
“It’s Minecraft, but in stellar VR. It is 100 percent the same Minecraft game that you can play every day, every week, every month, every year… on PlayStation 4. Nothing removed. 100 percent wholesome and pure full-fat Minecraft,” Mojang Studios stressed.
The original edition of Minecraft was first developed in May 2009, and officially released in Nov. 2011. Over the course of the decade, the game became a global hit, and went on to surpass 200 million in unit sales across various platforms. The onset of the pandemic caused a spike in the number of players.
