Liza Soberano responds to criticisms of her voice acting in ‘Trese’: ‘I completely understand that’

Liza Soberano said she completely understands the criticisms of her voice acting in the Netflix animated series Trese

In a podcast interview with beauty queens Pia Wurtzbach, Carla Lizardo, and Bianca Guidotti, Soberano admitted that she anticipated the backlash when she decided to take on the role of Alexandra Trese.

“In voice acting, you’re giving life to another character, not yourself. So, just like any universe like Harry Potter, Marvel, or DC, their supporters are very protective of those universes and characters,” Soberano, who dubbed Trese in Filipino, said. “I can understand if there are people who have opinions about my voice acting or me even getting cast as Alexandra Trese. I completely understand that.”

Despite the criticisms, Soberano said she’s grateful for the opportunity because she learned a lot. She revealed that voice acting has become a “new passion” for her too.

“It’s something I want to continue doing. I want to take lessons for it so that I can apply it in acting,” she added.

Soberano revealed that she only spent two days—with six hours per day—giving life to the character of Alexandra.

“I kind of had separation anxiety after doing it. I felt like ‘This is it? This is all I had to do?’ I wanted to do more,” she added.

Soberano also admitted that playing the role of Alexandra Trese felt “like an ode” to her boyfriend Enrique Gil, who’s passionate about voice acting.

Trese is based on the award-winning Filipino fantasy, crime-horror, graphic novel series of the same name by Kajo Baldisimo and Budjette Tan. It follows the story of Alexandra Trese, a detective who solves crimes of supernatural origins where mythical creatures of local folklore live among humans.

The six-episode animated series premiered on Netflix last June.
