Marvel to revive Paul Bettany's Vision for upcoming series
Marvel Studios is bringing back Paul Bettany's character Vision for a new, untitled Disney+ series set for 2026.
According to a report by Variety, the film and television company is in talks with Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas to bring back Vision and serve as showrunner for the series.
The synthezoid made from vibranium died at the hands of Thanos during the events of the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War. He was then recreated by Wanda Maximoff using her Chaos Magic in the 2021 miniseries WandaVision before he was ultimately erased.
Vision is played by actor Paul Bettany, known for films such as Gangster No. 1, A Knight's Tale, and A Beautiful Mind, and he will once again reprise the role for the upcoming series.
Since it's still in early development, the studio has yet to release a synopsis as well as other cast members who will be joining Bettany in the entertainment offering.
Variety reported that Marvel tapped Matalas as they were impressed by his work during the third season of Star Trek: Picard, which brought back the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation to widespread acclaim.
It earned Matalas a WGA award nomination for the series finale that premiered in 2023.
With this, the untitled Vision show is set to become Marvel’s first new live-action series in almost two years. Their last one was She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in 2022, which centered on Bruce Banner's cousin Jennifer Walters, a lawyer specializing in cases involving superhumans who also becomes the green superhero She-Hulk.
A separate report also stated that Marvel's releases will now be limited to no more than three films and up to two Disney+ shows each year.
CEO Bob Iger explained that this is part of their overall strategy to reduce output and focus on quality.
"We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three," the Disney CEO said. "And we’re working hard on what that path is."
Marvel is currently on its Phase Five in its so-called "Marvel Cinematic Universe," with Deadpool & Wolverine being their most recent film project. The WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along is next in line when it comes to their Disney+ lineup of shows. It's slated for a Sept. 18 release.
