Rockstar Games has confirmed that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise is in active development, while the expanded and enhanced versions of GTA V for current-gen consoles will be hitting store shelves this coming March 15, 2022.

In a “Grand Theft Auto Community Update” posted on the studio’s website Friday, Feb. 4, the video game publisher shared updates on the new ports of GTA V coming in March and shared how GTA Online will evolve on next-gen consoles.

GTA V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will reportedly feature HDR graphics, native 60 frames-per-second, and ray-tracing, among other upgrades over their current generation counterparts.

GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S also includes a range of improvements like the new Hao’s Special Works auto shop. And an all-new Career Builder intro for new players + instant access to one of four illicit businesses and a GTA$ windfall to get started, according to the publisher's updates on Twitter

At the end of the update, Rockstar Games officially confirmed that the next chapter in the GTA franchise is well underway.

Here’s the publisher’s full statement about the next GTA title:

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered—and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

GTA V was originally released way back in September 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, the action-adventure game has been ported to PC, PS4, Xbox One and its leap to the current-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X|S means the game will exist across three console generations.

The latest ports of the game were originally announced with a release date of November 2021, which was pushed back to March this year.

Though the original version of GTA Online was recently shut down, the PS4 and Xbox One versions continue to remain popular with players and receive updates every year.

Rockstar Games thanked the GTA Online community for their support and teased that there was "much more to come in 2022 and beyond."
