SEGA eyeing Dreamcast Mini console

SEGA's Dreamcast was one of the greatest consoles ever made, competing alongside Sony’s PlayStation 2, Microsoft’s Xbox, and Nintendo’s GameCube for the title of the best sixth-gen video game console of the 2000s. 

If you’re a SEGA fan, then here's some exciting news: Sega is considering a Dreamcast Mini device.

In a recent interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sega's mini chief Yosuke Okunari recently revealed that the company intends to resurrect a miniature version of the Dreamcast console as the next device in the firm's retro line. 

“I think for the next one, we may go with a concept close to the Mega Drive Mini. If I have to say some names, it could be an SG-1000 Mini or a Dreamcast Mini,” Okunari shares.

The SG-1000 was a very limited release console from SEGA back in 1983 so it’s far more likely that the company will go for the mini version of the Dreamcast. Okunari also disclosed that whatever the name of the next mini console, it will take some time to produce so fans will have to wait a bit more to get their hands on a Dreamcast remake.

“When we do the next one, I feel like the project scope will be much bigger as we gaze upon the world. So we won’t be able to release it at this time the next year or two years after the Mega Drive Mini. We can’t make it that quickly,” he says.

The SEGA Dreamcast is widely regarded as a cult favorite, produced from 1998 to 2001 and selling more than 9.13 million units worldwide. Among the most popular games on the Dreamcast console were Soul Caliber, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Crazy Taxi, Quake III Arena, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear.
