Ballet Philippines to stage 'La Sylphide,' one of the oldest surviving romantic ballets
Ballet Philippines is set to stage La Sylphide for the launch of its 55th season in August.
La Sylphide, one of the oldest surviving romantic ballets in history, will tell the complicated love story of James Ruben, a humble farmer who is enchanted by the otherworldly beauty of a forest fairy (otherwise known as a sylph), despite being engaged to Effie.
After receiving the love confession from sylph, James decides to follow the fairy into the forest. He later met a witch who gave him a bewitched scarf.
However, chaos began when he presented the scarf to the sylph, which extremely affected everyone involved. James' choices lead to a dramatic conclusion that will leave the audience contemplating the true consequences of this enchantment.
The romantic ballet first premiered in Paris in 1832 and was originally choreographed by Filippo Taglioni, with a libretto by Adolphe Nourrit and music by Jean-Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer.
It was created to showcase the talent of his daughter, legendary ballerina Marie Taglioni. It also revolutionized the art form by being the first to be performed entirely en pointe.
It eventually became a pivotal work during the romantic movement of the 19th century, which mostly explored more the supernatural and ethereal themes. This is also when the romantic tutu skirt was introduced, which is now an iconic part of ballet.
For this year’s run, Ballet Philippines’ rendition will combine the ballet’s original charm with Filipino romanticism and mysticism. They will also inaugurate the season’s theme of relevé, which means to rise onto the tips of the toes.
Other shows that they will stage in this 55th season are Peter Pan and Ang Panaginip.
La Sylphide will run from Aug. 9 to 11 at The Theater at Solaire. Secure your tickets on their official website or via Ticketworld.
