‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ trailer reportedly leaks online ahead of official release

Published Aug 23, 2021 2:14 pm

Sony is swiftly blocking an alleged Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer circulating on social media ahead of the trailer’s official release.

#SpiderManNoWayHome was a trending topic on Twitter today, hours after a leak reportedly offered a first look at the latest superhero installment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has moved to have the supposed leaked trailer blocked on social media.

Fans who did manage to view the clip online were quick to share memes and screenshots alnog with the hashtag, fuelling the online hype.

Over the last year, Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the first trailer or teaser for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The highly-anticipated film is expected to be the bridge between the events of MCU series WandaVision and Loki and set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The leaked video clip seems to feature a lot of unfinished special effects and unedited scenes, though star Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) are clearly present throughout. The nearly three-minute long trailer picks up where Spider-Man: Far From Home left off with Spider-Man's secret identity revealed to the world.

The low-quality grainy video of a phone recording that has been making the rounds on Twitter, Tik-Tok, and the like, teases a few elements that may confirm or debunk certain rumors regarding characters Doc Octopus, Green Goblin and Electro.

While it’s entirely possible that the clip is an elaborate fan-made hoax, the trailer does feature scenes that appear to be entirely unique in terms of footage and audio, with many fans saying it's legit.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously assured fans that a trailer would be released, after months of silence regarding the third Spider-Man installment.

Marvel Studios has been very reserved regarding the plot and character details of the upcoming Spidey film, though there have been various casting reports, including actor Alfred Molina's admission last year that he will be appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Returning from previous Spider-Man films beyond the MCU with Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx will reportedly reprise his role as Electro from Sony's Amazing Spider-Man 2. Jon Watts also returns to direct.

There have also been various rumors about Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appearing as alternate universe versions of the character.

Speculation is high that the studio will be releasing the official trailer following their scheduled CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Monday evening. Sony Pictures Entertainment will be kicking off the movie convention's opening night with an exclusive presentation highlighting its upcoming releases from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, US time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to arrive in theaters December 17, 2021.
