#FollowFriday: Make-up artists for your Halloween ‘Glow Up’
Need a break from the usual glamorous lifestyle makeup looks and pastel shades dominating your feed? Or maybe you’re looking for a fun and crazy makeup look to “Glow Up” your next Zoom meeting?
Check out a few Instagram accounts of make-up artists, body-painting artists, and SFX artists for some out-of-this world spooky inspiration for Halloween.
Ophelia Liu
Ophelia Liu is a Hong Kong-born self-taught make-up artist and fashion graduate who won season 2 of Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
Throughout the reality tv competition, Liu brought an insane amount of talent, creativity, and determination and quickly became a fan favorite.
Her edgy and gothic makeup work pushes the boundary of what defines “beauty.” She puts her own spin on each challenge, infusing each look with her macabre style, channeling nightmarish influences from the likes of H.R. Giger to create sick artwork and textures on human skin just using normal makeup.
Her latest looks on her Instagram account draw inspiration from films, shows, as well as goth, punk, and rock subcultures. Check out her Halloween 2020 series, where she channels a Soul Eater, Psychobaby and more. She also recently reimagined Vikings, where she combines Floki eyeliner, Lagertha's war paint, and Ivan's hair, with splashes of blood for good measure. Ding dong!
Amazing Jiro
Amazing Jiro is a Tokyo-based artist who specializes in special effects (SFX) makeup as well as body painting. He’s worked on movies like Attack on Titan, Shin Godzilla, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. His works are nothing short of amazing (truly deserving of the name).
From aging makeup and optical-illusion body painting, to incredibly detailed face paint of skulls and zombies, every makeup look is a work of art. See for yourself on his account and YouTube Channel.
Embergrim
Makeup artist Elen Mardzhera manages to infuse glamorous looks with a dark twist. From Steampunk-inspired and fantasy characters like fairies, fauns and forest girls, Disney monsters and villains like Freddy Kreuger, and characters from streaming shows like The Witcher, Embergrim’s looks are gothic, yet still gorgeous and highly editorial.
Design Dain
South Korean visual illusion artist Dain Yoon specializes in photorealistic illusions of eyes, lips and faces, and will have many people feeling dizzy or freaked out. While she’s often called a makeup artist, she's actually a classically trained painter who just happens to use herself as a canvas.
Althouth the make-up looks Photoshopped, each look is 100 percent authentic, painted by herself in mirror image. Her colorful feed focuses on more lively subjects than gothic and macabre ones, but the optical face painting will freak you out!
Madeyewlook
Alexys Fleming is a self-taught body painter who's known for her fun and energetic YouTube tutorials.
The licensed cosmetologist, self-taught makeup artist, and licensed esthetician known as MadeYewLook on YouTube (with over 2.6 million subscribers) shares tutorials and select photos on her Instagram feed.
In her latest tutorial, she imagines what would happen if “IT” (Pennywise the Clown) and Venom were combined. The result? Terrifying yet so cool.
