Neil Gaiman's ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ gets pilot order from HBO Max

HBO Max has reportedly ordered a pilot episode for the series adaptation of DC Comics' Dead Boy Detectives.

According to a report by Variety, the upcoming one-hour series based on the characters by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman will revolve around two ghosts—Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine—who opted not to enter the afterlife in order to investigate supernatural crimes on Earth.

The pilot episode currently has no director but production is expected to begin in November. Warner Bros. Television will serve as the studio while The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey is writing and executive producing the upcoming series with Jeremy Carver, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden.

There's still no word yet on the cast but Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant are set to play Rowland and Paine in Doom Patrol's upcoming third season. Variety, however, noted that both Croft and Tennant are "not believed to be attached to the pilot at this time."

If the project pushes through, the Dead Boy Detectives will join the growing list of Gaiman's adapted works which include Lucifer, American Gods, and Good Omens. Aside from the upcoming HBO Max series, TV adaptations of Gaiman's Anansi Boys and The Sandman are also underway.
