OnlyFans to ban sexually explicit material starting in October
Content subscription service OnlyFans announced that it will ban material showing “sexually explicit conduct” starting Oct. 1.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” the company wrote in a statement, following requests from its banking partners and payment processors.
According to a Reuters report, OnlyFans—which now has about 130 million users—declared it would still “allow creators to post content containing nudity if it was consistent with OnlyFans’ policies.”
The new guidelines remain vague as of this writing, but the company said it "will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines."
“OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform,” it added. “All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.”
Founded in 2016 by Essex businessman Tim Stokely, the social media platform is primarily known for its adult content—on top of posts in line with food and fitness. Creators are permitted to share nude photos and videos of themselves, and then charge their subscribers for a fee on a monthly basis. “In return for hosting the material, OnlyFans takes a 20% share of all payments,” as per BBC.
