Netflix drops first official trailer for ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’

Published Dec 21, 2021 12:18 pm

Netflix has unveiled the first official look at the upcoming prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Originally revealed as a post-credit scene in The Witcher's season 2 finale, the trailer offers fans a glimpse at the highly-awaited prequel event starring Sophia Brown as Éile, Laurence O’Fuarain as Fjall, and Michelle Yeoh as Scían.

First announced in 2020, the prequel to the highly-successful The Witcher live-action adaptation is a six-part limited series that will take place in the elven world 1,200 years before the time of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia and will explore the events that led to the “conjunction of spheres,” a period where “worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be.”

Check out the teaser trailer below:

Brown’s Eile is described as “an elite warrior blessed with the voice of a goddess" who has “left her clan and position as Queen's guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician. However, a "grand reckoning on the Continent forces her to return to the way of the blade in her quest for vengeance and redemption.”

Fjall, played by O’Fuarain, is born into a clan of warriors sworn to protect a King. In his quest for redemption, Fjall finds himself fighting beside the most unlikely of allies as he carves a path of vengeance across a continent in turmoil.

Scian, meanwhile, is the very last of her nomadic tribe. The blade-wielding elf's deadly quest to retrieve a stolen sacred sword will lead her on a journey that will change the outcome of the Continent.

Additional cast members of the prequel series include Mirren Mack (Merwyn), Lenny Henry (Balor), Jacob Collins Levy (Eredin), Lizzie Annis (Zacaré), Huw Novelli (Callan “Brother Death”), Francesca Mills (Meldof), Amy Murray (Fenrik), Nathaniel Curtis (Brían), Zach Wyatt (Syndril), and Dylan Moran (Uthrok One-Nut).

Sarah O’Gorman (Cursed, The Last Kingdom) will helm episodes 101, 104 and 106, while Vicky Jewson (Close, Born of War) will direct episodes 102, 103 and 105.

Declan de Barra will serve as the showrunner and executive producer along with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, Matt O’Toole, Jason Brown and Sean Daniel from Hivemind, and Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Platige Films. Author Andrzej Sapkowski, meanwhile, will serve as a creative consultant on the prequel series.

Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, but teased that the upcoming prequel series is slated to debut next year.

While we are still several months away from that, it’s worth mentioning that all eight episodes of The Witcher’s second season are now streaming on Netflix.
