‘The Flintstones’ animated sequel series ‘Bedrock’ in the works

The first family of primetime animation is getting ready to rock again 60 years after they first aired on the small screen.

A sequel to the animated series The Flintstones titled Bedrock has reportedly landed at Fox.

The network is developing an animated adult comedy series sequel with Elizabeth Banks set to voice Pebbles Flintstone in addition to producing.

Bedrock will follow the Flintstone family “two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”

The upcoming series will be co-produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment, with Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman serving as executive producers through Brownstone Productions.

The original series, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, was originally broadcast on ABC and ran for six seasons from 1960 to 1966.

The series took place in a romanticized Stone Age setting and followed the lives of the title family, the Flintstones, and their next-door neighbors, the Rubbles.

Following the show's cancellation in 1966, the show was revived in the early 1970s with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm having grown into teenagers. In ABC’s 1993 made-for-television animated movie, Pebbles, then voiced by Megan Mullally, works for an advertising agency, marries Bamm-Bamm and ends up moving to Hollyrock, a fictional version of Hollywood.

The cartoon has also spawned several different series and made-for-TV movies and adapted into a live-action film in 1994, and a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas in 2000.

“Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment.

“Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really,” Thorn added.

As reported by Variety, Fox’s ad-supported video on demand service Tubi has acquired the rights to all 166 episodes of the original cartoon  and will launch it in time for its 60th anniversary.

No release date has been revealed for Bedrock. The Flintstones will soon be available to stream for free on Tubi, Fox's AVOD service, starting May 1.
