You may be able to play Game Boy titles on the Nintendo Switch soon

Nintendo's Switch Online service is celebrating its third anniversary this September and rumors say this year, Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles may be coming.

According to the latest Nate the Hate podcast as well as reports from EuroGamer and Nintendo Life, Nintendo will bulk up its library games from the retro handheld soon.

The rumor stems from a datamine, which revealed that there are four emulators (Kachikachi, Canoe, Hiyoko, and Count) inside the NES app. Podcast host Nate and MVG believe that the third one, Hiyoko, is the Game Boy emulator. Eurogamer thinks other retro platforms are in the cards as well.

However, Game Boy Advance titles might not be coming to the subscription service anytime soon. Nintendo Life cites how developers are working on re-releases as the main reason why a GBA emulator won't be included in the update.

During its 2018 launch, Nintendo Switch Online started offering NES games. SNES games followed in 2019. Currently, the classic game library houses around 80 NES and 50 SNES titles, including Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong, and more.

Interestingly, Nintendo told  The Verge in an official statement: “We have nothing to announce on this topic.” Are they simply throwing reporters off the scent?

Aside from the emulators, Nintendo is taking gamers down nostalgia lane with its Game & Watch consoles for franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario.
