‘The Beatles: Get Back’ to debut as documentary series

The Beatles: Get Back will now debut in November as a mini-documentary series to premiere exclusively on Disney Plus.

The show was initially created to be a theatrical film, but director Peter Jackson, who also directed The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has retrieved more footage in the past three years of production.

Over 60 hours of video footage shot in 1969 by the late director of Let It Be, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and over 150 hours of audio recordings were retrieved for the much-awaited series.

The series will take a look at the friendship and creative process including songwriting, recording, and rehearsals of music legends John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison.

The Beatles: Get Back will show the preparation of The Beatles for their last live performance as a group during the rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row. It will also feature other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.

The two surviving members of the band, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have earlier shown their excitement for the then-movie.

“The friendship and love between us comes over and reminds me of what a crazily beautiful time we had,” vocalist and bassist McCartney said.

“There was [sic] hours and hours of us just laughing and playing music, not at all like the version that came out. There was a lot of joy and I think Peter will show that. I think this version will be a lot more peace [sic] and loving, like we really were," drummer Starr said. 

Last year in December, a sneak peek montage was released on the official YouTube account of The Beatles which features multiple rehearsals of the iconic group. The official trailer is yet to be released.

The series will have three episodes, approximately two hours each, rolling out over three days from November 25 to 27. It is also being made with the enthusiastic support of Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, according to the official website of the band. 

Ahead of the series premiere, a 240-page The Beatles: Get Back book will be released on October 12. It will include never before published photos, photographs from the three sessions as well as exclusives and conservation transcripts in nine languages, including English.
