EJ Obiena qualifies for the 2024 Paris Olympics
EJ Obiena is again going to the Olympics!
The world’s No. 3 pole vaulter secured a slot at the 2024 Paris Olympics following his feat at this year’s Stockholm Diamond League - Bauhaus Galan in Sweden.
The Filipino ace cleared the entry standard of 5.82 meters just a day after the Olympic qualification season kicked off. Male pole vaulters are required to clear that exact minimum within the July 1 to June 30 period to make it to the Paris Olympic Games.
The athlete emerged at the second spot of the event, bagging a silver medal—next to Swedish-American Armand Duplantis, who placed first after clearing 6.05 meters.
Obiena also represented the country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and landed on the 11th spot in its men’s pole vault event after clearing the 5.70-meter jump.
In July 2022, he made it to the third spot on the World Athletics rankings in the men’s pole vault.
Obiena bagged gold as he set a new meet record of 5.65m at the Southeast Asian Games in May this year.
