Twitter is making space for ‘Twitter Spaces’ – but what is it exactly?

ICYDK, Twitter has rolled outSpaces, a new feature that lets users create their own room, called Space, and host live audio-only conversations with their followers.

It may sound like a purely chaotic idea, but parts of Twitter have since been abuzz with the update, as anyone can create a Space that can be joined by hundreds of people. To rule out the chaos though, only 11 users (including the host) can speak at any given time. 

When starting a Space, the Host can pick who can speak by choosing from Everyone, People You Follow, or make it completely exclusive by only inviting select people.

Once Space starts, the host can manage who can speak by granting and revoking speaking permissions. Listeners can also request access to speak by tapping on “Request” under the microphone icon.

Think huddled conversation by the bonfire, but it’s hundreds of your mutuals sitting by the warm glow of the Internet.

Similar to exclusive apps like Discord and Clubhouse, it could take a while before getting used to being in an online conversation with over 100 people; but in this era of distanced friendships, that beautiful mix of online intimacy and chaos can be a welcome change of pace.

Meanwhile, Spaces is just one of the latest updates Twitter has introduced in recent months, along with the 24-hour stories called Fleets and the subscription service Super Follows.
