It’s official! The Last of Us Part 2 has won the most number of awards of any video game in history according to a game of the year award tracker.

Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed sequel to the 2013 action adventure game which first introduced Joel and Ellie to the world, managed to bag 261 awards in 2020 according to gameawards.net.

As of this writing, the running total which is still currently in progress, including both media outlet awards and reader’s choice awards, totals 265 awards.

CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the previous record holder for the most Game of the Year awards for over five years, earning 260 wins altogether in 2015.

However, it looks like it’s time to toss a coin to Geralt as he passes the honor to Ellie—and yes, Abby—the protagonists of The Last of Us Part 2

The video game award tracking website has been documenting all the awards dished out by media outlets and readers’ choice awards, and shows readers where games fall or rise depending on how many awards they get each year since 2003.

Despite the divisive narrative of the sequel and new characters which has split the gaming community, there’s no doubt that The Last of Us Part 2 is the biggest and most talked about game in 2020.

The game smashed records when it was first released, and in just three days managed to sell four million copies, becoming the fastest selling PlayStation exclusive to date.

Actress Laura Bailey, who voiced newcomer Abby, won Performance of the Year and the game itself bagged the Game of the Year win at the 2020 Game Awards.

The Last of Us Part 2 is the clear champion not just this past year, but of all time. Based on stats on the awards tracking website, for 2020 Hades trails in second place with 55 awards while Ghost of Tsushima sits in third spot with 50. Final Fantasy VII Remake comes in sixth with only 20 awards.

On the sidebar, the website also provides a retrospective of the overall winners of previous years, including 2019’s Death Stranding (102 awards), 2018’s God of War (209 awards), 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (224 awards) and 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (174 awards).
