Studio Ghibli's ‘Earwig and the Witch’ to stream on Netflix in November

Netflix is further expanding its catalogue of Studio Ghibli films with the addition of its latest animated movie Earwig and the Witch.

The streamer confirmed on Thursday that the acclaimed Japanese studio's first fully CGI film will be available on its service beginning Nov. 18, joining Studio Ghibli's classic animated movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and the Academy Award-winning movie Spirited Away.

“We’re thrilled that our film Earwig and the Witch will reach many countries and territories through Netflix," director Goro Miyazaki said in a statement.

Based on a novel by English writer Diana Wynne Jones, Studio Ghibli's first CG outing tells the story of Earwig, a young mischievous girl who gets adopted by a grumpy witch. The 10-year-old girl, who agrees to serve as the witch's "extra pair of hands," later discovers a world of spells and potions as she tries to uncover the secrets of her new guardians. 

"The film is Studio Ghibli’s first fully 3D CGI film which prompted us with an exciting challenge to reflect the spirit and pride of our studio using this new artform," Miyazaki added. "Through that experience we met Earwig, our rebellious protagonist who grows to overcome difficulties with her wits and relentless energy."

Aside from Studio Ghibli's upcoming CG feature, there are a total of 21 animated films currently available on Netflix, including The Wind Rises, Arrietty, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea and the fan-favorite Howl's Moving Castle.
