MTV Movie & TV Awards take a break in 2024, to return next year

Sorry, no Golden Popcorn this year.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that MTV Movie and TV Awards will take a break for its 2024 ceremony but will return next year, promising a revamped format.

MTV did not offer an official explanation for their decision to forgo the ceremony, however, last year’s ceremony was pre-taped due to the Writer’s Guild of America’s strike. Drew Barrymore was set to host, but she dropped out in support of WGA.

"Until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me," she said in a statement.

In the same year, MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) did not air because of the Israel-Hamas war.

The award show, originally known as the MTV Movie Awards when it premiered in 1992, was renamed MTV Movie and TV Awards in 2017.

Known for its fan-voting culture, the ceremony has been a source of celebration for pop culture and the latest Hollywood hot topics, honoring movies that have made a significant impact on a wide variety of audiences.

Compared to other award shows, MTV Movie and TV Awards connect to their viewers by having unique categories like Best Kiss, Best Hero category, and Best Villain.

Other MTV award shows like MTV Music Video Awards and MTV EMA will push through this year.
