DC Films, Marvel Studios to skip Comic-Con this year

This year, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), just like last year, opted to host the much-awaited yearly event at home—Comic-Con@Home.

Two of the most anticipated panels, Disney’s Marvel Studios and Warner Bros’s DC Films, will not attend SDCC this year. This means fans of the films won’t be hearing much about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Marvel’s Eternals, or any of the upcoming installments in the comic book film universes and their future plans.

For DC Films, skipping seems to be the new norm. It’s been three years since their last appearance at Comic-Con. They were last seen at SDCC in July 2018 with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot revealing the sneak peek for the Wonder Woman film sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Nevertheless, DC comics will still be present for this year’s Comic-Con@Home to feature print titles in the works. Warner Bros. TV is also reported to show up, highlighting some of their small screen comic book adaptations such as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

On the other hand, Marvel Studios, who handles one of the biggest franchises ever—the Marvel Cinematic Universe—last sat at SDCC back in 2019. With all eyes on them, Marvel basked in the limelight with one of their biggest announcements yet, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, WandaVision, and Loki. However, these titles were all moved to a 2021 release due to the pandemic.

In 2020, Marvel did their own thing and revealed a huge chunk of its plans during Disney Investor Day 2020. DC also had their own virtual convention called DC FanDome where they showed off their various projects like new films, TV shows, and comics. DC FanDome is set to return this year in September.

As for Sony, who Marvel has co-produced films in the works such as Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is still no news if they’re also sitting out the panel this year, so fans are still expecting some sort of hint from the following upcoming big films.

Meanwhile, Comic-Con@Home will highlight other movies like Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and Warner Bros. Animation’s DC Batman: The Long Halloween, Part 2 and even TV shows like Bob's Burgers.

San Diego Comic-Con@Home will run from July 23 to 25, while the live edition of SDCC will be on Nov. 26 to 28.
