Is your Twitter follower count dropping? This could be why

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has shared that users might experience a drop in followers due to the site's new spam account policy.

In a tweet, the billionaire shared that the platform is in the process of "purging a lot of spam/spam accounts right now," so people's follower count may drop.

Musk's tweet is a long time coming for the site that's been addressing the proliferation of spam in recent months. As early as July before Musk acquired the company, Twitter promised to remove over 1 million spam accounts daily.

Spam accounts or bots are known as fake accounts that imitate real Twitter users. From there, they can share automated tweets or even spread misinformation, scams, and propaganda depending on the intention of the creators.

Back in April, Musk vowed to "defeat the spam bots or die trying" before officially buying out the site in October.
