This wild Twitter thread has been made into a Hollywood film
Just when you thought that Twitter’s crazy stories are too good to be true, Hollywood has finally found its potential.
Production company A24 (Minari, Midsommar, Hereditary) is releasing a full-length film titled Zola based on a 2015 Twitter thread by Twitter user @_zolarmoon. After reading the full story, you’d be curious for an adaptation too
The 148-tweet thread is a wild ride that starts with A’Ziah Wells King, or Zola, befriending a girl named ‘Jess’. One day, Jess convinces Zola to join her for a road trip to sunny Florida to meet up with some friends. It then becomes an intriguing story about sex work, scamming, and downright deception. Seriously, it’s best you read it for yourself.
The film's tagline is also directly lifted from the thread's first tweet: "Ya’ll wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out? It’s kind of long but full of suspense."
The Washington Post deemed the story “too crazy to be real” back in 2015, but concluded that many young women like Zola and Jess do get caught up in the system of stripping at an early age.
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 24, 2020, and it’s set to be released worldwide on June 30.
