Fil-Am costume designer Zaldy, comedian Nico Santos honored in Variety's Power of Pride list
Two Filipinos are included in US entertainment magazine Variety's Power of Pride list for 2021. The list, done annually by Variety every June, is meant to be a celebration and acknowledgement of “community and of change makers, placing a rainbow-hued spotlight on LGBTQ+ entertainers who use their power to promote inclusion.”
Variety’s Power of Pride list this year honored costume designer Zaldy Goco and comedian Nico Santos.
Zaldy Goco, more known as Zaldy, is a Filipino-American costume designer who has notably worked in Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour, Britney Spears’ “Femme Fatale” tour, and Lady Gaga’s “Monster Ball” tour.
Fans of the reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race will remember Zaldy as the designer of the show's host RuPaul Charles. He has won three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction, or Reality Programming category from 2017 to 2019 for the show.
Meanwhile, Nico Santos is a Filipino American comedian who has starred in the movie Crazy Rich Asian and TV series Superstore, where he plays Mateo Liwanag, a gay, undocumented Filipino sales associate at the titular big-box store.
Other honorees included in the list are Elliot Page, who revealed last year he is transgender, and American rapper Lil Nas X, among others.
