Just like that, August is almost over. Are you thinking of giving your space a revamp to welcome the coming month?

Having a home makeover can be quite tricky especially if you have no idea where to start. Making it a point that its structure would make your everyday life easier is no easy feat, let alone amping it up with design. Knowing that it can be a difficult process, PhilSTAR L!fe asked IKEA Philippines’ interior designers Maricar Matencio and Allan Fernandez for some of their best tips. Here’s what they shared with us.

First and foremost, you have to figure out your usual needs and activities in your place. “Well-designed spaces are best achieved if we take into consideration the life-at-home activities and real-life needs and solutions,” said Matencio, who believes that functionality should come before decoration.

For his part, Fernandez pointed out that bed frame, mattress, wardrobe, and lighting fixture must be top of mind when redecorating your house. Secondary furnishings include mirrors, shelves, desks, and chairs. Among the tertiary furnishings are storage and organizing hooks.

“Sometimes, being creative can save you time and money. Don’t be scared to explore furnishings that can work on secondary functions. Those flexible furnishings are smart choices,” Fernandez stressed.

Colors are just as paramount when deciding on a home makeover and you can start with walls. If you think painting the entire house in one color is boring, an accent wall is the way to go. “Color selection does not only unify the rest of your room aesthetics but also express your mood, emotion, and character,” explained Fernandez. It can be done with a variety of wallpapers, recycled wood, hand-painted murals, and fabric.

Furnishing with textiles is a plus as they offer various functions in a home. “They set the style, add softness, create comfort and warmth, and bring personality and character,” Fernandez said, adding that materials and application can make any space come alive. “Textiles vary from ready-made curtains, meter fabrics, and even rugs.”

Don’t forget about accessories. Apart from vases and picture frames, you can also use mirrors, posters, decorative lights, and plants. “Accessories show your soul, your emotions. They are living proof of your memories and pride,” he explained. “These, all combined or even mixed and matched, will certainly breathe new life into your home.”

“It doesn’t require much time and cost, really. Your passion, willingness, and creativity are a sure thing to make your dream space a reality,” Fernandez concluded.
