Be on Santa’s nice list: Adopt a pet for the holidays

Christmas is all about giving and if you’re thinking of ways to be extra nice this year, why not adopt a pet for the holidays?

Earlier this month, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) launched the program “Home for the Holidays.” It grants Metro Manila residents the opportunity to foster a dog or cat during the Christmas break, while most of the organization’s staff and volunteers are not around to keep them company.

It’s an easy way to give back during this season, as your chosen pet will only stay in your home for two weeks, beginning Dec. 21 or 22 this year until Jan. 3, 2021. You also have the option to extend the duration to your desired schedule.

“It's a very short period, which can also be a trial run for those who are unsure if getting a pet is something that they can commit to,” PAWS added.

In case you would want to make them part of your family forever, PAWS said that the adoption process is just as simple as applying to foster.

To get started, fill out the application form on the PAWS website. The process includes a Zoom interview and house tour “to ensure that a safe space is provided for your fostered shelter animal,” PAWS said.

It’s best to send your application as early as today, as the deadline is on Dec. 20, 2020.

Adopting a pet for the holidays will not only give them “a taste of home” this season but will also give them comfort at the time they need it most. Christmas and New Year, PAWS said, are the “most stressful seasons in their lives. They get especially anxious when New Years' Eve rolls around and fireworks start going off.”

And to make your foster pets’ stay a fulfilling experience for both of you, Ricky Whitman, Vice President of US-based animal care organization Pasadena Humane, suggests that you also give them ample time to familiarize themselves in their new environment.

“For a successful adoption experience for both you and your new pet, be sure to make your pet’s comfort and security a high priority,” Whitman said.

“When adopting a pet during the holidays, it’s important to remember that your new pet is adjusting and stressed by the changes. Take special care to keep your new pet in a quiet safe place if you are having lots of guests, a party or unusual activity.”
