5 reasons to finally renovate your home this summer
It’s been two summers since the lockdowns, and we’re getting more attached to our living spaces—more caring about how it looks, more nit-picky than a house inspector—and we’ve been thinking of renovating our home all year long.
Design consultant Mike Salvador says that renovating is part of evolving. “A home evolves through the years as the occupant or family experiences growth, cultural change, economic or technological advancement,” he says, which leads us to the first reason to renovate this summer: a vision.
A dream turned into reality
“Renovating a home is synonymous with flourishing,” Salvador begins. “It's almost always a way to uplift a space, increase the potential of a place, or simply build toward a dream.” Not only can upgrading your home improve your space, it can also boost your mood and sense of fulfillment.
Salvador says he used to have a client who asked for assistance in renovating her resort home into what she and her late husband envisioned it to be.
“In fulfilling the couple’s wish, I felt a great depth of sanctity and gratitude,” he shares.
Strengthen your home
Summer is the perfect time for standard repainting and modifying your home's exteriors. This includes checking the electrical, mechanical, sanitary, and structural aspects of your home.
Salvador says that because of the lockdown, most clients wish they have a panoramic window in the living room. “Summer is the best time to fulfill this wish,” he says, adding that he likes a house to have at least two auras, one for summer and one for the holidays—the Christmas season.
Improve its functions and make it safer
“When the monsoon stops coming, it’s time to do your fixing,” he says. “Typhoons and floods will be back in a few months so homeowners should take advantage of the summer season for basic routine upkeep, fixing the roof, etc."
Doing house flips? According to Salvador, “You can renovate a residential structure within a certain budget and get impressive results. This will keep buyers visually engaged, promising a better revenue.”
Create more space
“The lockdown and quarantine have made us realize what we truly need in our home. Now, we need to transform a standard kitchen into a bigger, more functional, literally everyday kitchen, or create new rooms like a plant nursery, hobby room, Zoom office, home gym or workout room, mudroom, powder room, a lanai,” he explains.
Salvador recently revamped his backyard and laundry area. The concept is to make it look like a tiny fashion boutique with a cafe as you view it from the garden—which leads to the next reason for renovating: boredom.
Dealing with boredom
Staying at home all day will make you rethink all the corners of your home, which can be revamped with new furnishings. And if you’re a part of online home-decorating communities, you’ll be inspired by the number of members who share their home projects.
“It may have gotten to a point that every angle is dull or disinteresting. Want to modify or alter the rooms out of whim or fancy? It’s a big OK,” says the designer, who is also an architect.
“Renovating is sometimes meticulous, tricky, but ultimately satisfying!” he beams. Aside from keeping you busy, it improves your overall satisfaction with your newly improved space.
Lastly, Salvador reminds homeowners that “however you want your home to be renovated, always seek professional advice from architects, interior designers, stylists, electrical contractors. They can see it in a different light.”
Seeking professional advice can ultimately save you time and money, as compared to doing everything yourself. And AllHome’s 52 stores nationwide have in-house professionals who can answer your queries on home-building needs, furniture, kitchenware, even appliances for your next project.
