Indonesia's 'digital nomad visa' will let you live and work in Bali tax-free
If you were given the chance to live and work on the sandy tropical beaches of Bali, would you jump on the opportunity?
Indonesia announced that it will be offering a new type of visa, called "digital nomad visa," which would allow remote workers to live in the country tax-free for five years as long as their earnings come from companies outside the country.
“In the past, the ‘three Ss’ were sun, sea, and sand. We’re moving it to serenity, spirituality, and sustainability. This way we’re getting better quality and better impact on the local economy,” Indonesian tourism minister Sandiaga Uno told the South China Morning Post.
Uno said that this decision came from research showing Bali was the "top of mind" ideal destination for 95% of remote workers.
Currently, visitors can get either a tourist visa for a maximum of 60 days or a six-month temporary work permit. Anyone who stays longer than 183 days would be considered a local tax resident and their income would be subject to Indonesian tax rates.
While there aren't any application steps out yet, there are a few known requirements for the digital nomad visa. First, you must have a valid passport and must work for a company located outside Indonesia.
