Vegan chocolate lovers, listen up!

In response to the wishes of its plant-based fans around the world, Nestlé whipped up the first vegan version of one of its beloved confectionary bars, KitKat, which is set to debut later this year in several countries across the globe.

Called KitKat V, the new chocolate bar is certified vegan and made from 100-percent sustainable cocoa. Bloomberg reported that this vegan version uses a rice-based formula as a milk substitute.

It reportedly took two years to develop by Nestlé’s chocolate experts at its confectionery research and development center in York, UK.

The question of KitKat lovers is how will this vegan alternative fare with the original KitKat that many love?

“Taste was a key factor when developing the plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” said Nestlé Confectionery Product Technology Center head Louise Barrett in a statement.

“We used our expertise in ingredients, together with a test-and-learn approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat.”

The company is not new in the plant-based arena as it has launched several alternatives to dairy in its wide range of products including non-dairy ice cream, coffee creamers, non-dairy cheese, and even rice- and oat-based drinks.

In its announcement, the company has yet to confirm which countries will KitKat V be initially available and when exactly it will drop.
