LOOK: A cute beagle from the PNP’s explosive disposal K9 unit shows off its skills
A beagle and his trainer from the PNP’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) K9 Group gave a demonstration at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig this morning, Nov. 28.
The beagle showed off its obedience skills as his trainer gave him hand signals to heel, stay, stand and spin, etc.
The country’s EOD K9 Unit was created in 2016 under Resolution No. 2016-277 as primarily responsible for the management, deployment, utilization and development of EOD and canine units of the PNP, according to the PNP’s website.
The EOD/K9 Group is tasked to conduct the safe disposal of all bombs and neutralization of hazards from chemical, nuclear, and improvised explosive devices (IED) that create a threat to public safety.
The unit conducts post-blast and crime scene investigations and is responsible for breeding, training, and deployment of the PNP’s working dogs.
Canine units across the globe “work” in airports and other ports of entry to sniff out explosives, firearms and drugs. In other countries, airport dogs are trained to detect illegal food and large amounts of cash.
They are also used in war zones to detect hidden explosives.
Working dogs help search and rescue groups to find survivors (and the dead too) under rubbles in the aftermath of earthquakes. In the US, K9 units helped investigators and the New York Fire Department search for bodies during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Some dogs were later reported to suffer from PTSD.
