Marcos urges Filipinos to transcend political barriers on Ninoy Aquino Day
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to "transcend political barriers" in hopes of having a "more united and prosperous Philippines" during the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day on Monday, Aug. 21.
In a message, Marcos said Aquino "became an example of relentlessness and resolve for many Filipinos" by "standing for his beliefs and fighting for battles he deemed right."
"In our resolute quest for a more united and prosperous Philippines, let us transcend political barriers that hamper us from securing the comprehensive welfare and advancement of our beloved people," the president said. "Let us imbue ourselves with clarity of mind and unity in purpose so we can proceed towards a future that resonates with our hopes and dreams."
Marcos noted that when the love for the nation "becomes the compass that guides our words and actions, we foster an environment where empathy, compassion, and dialogue prevail, leading us to a more enlightened and harmonious society."
"Let us allow this compelling force to promote collaboration, celebrate diversity, and create a society that is teeming with vitality and inspiration," he said.
"Together, let us develop a Philippines grounded in reason and fortitude, where the boundaries of our personal biases fade and the welfare of all become our priority," he continued.
"As we take measured yet realistic strides towards progress, let us allow our indomitable spirit to drive us to uplift every Filipino and build an inclusive and more progressive Philippines," Marcos added.
Ninoy Aquino Day is observed as a special non-working holiday every Aug. 21, by Republic Act No. 9256.
It marks the day the opposition senator was assassinated at the defunct Manila International Airport in 1983 when he returned from exile during the martial rule of Marcos's father and namesake.
The MIA was renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport via Republic Act 6639 in 1987 during the term of his widow Cory Aquino.
