Makati to implement car-free Sunday mornings at Ayala Avenue in September
Craving peace and quiet amid the bustling cities in the Metro? Makati might just be the place for you as the city is holding car-free Sunday mornings in September.
In a social media post on Aug. 18, the local government unit announced that it is bringing back its car-free Sundays at Ayala Avenue. The program, which goes beyond having traffic-free roads, will take place on Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
“Get ready for Car-Free Sunday Morning at Ayala Avenue, Makatizens! Mark your calendars and set your alarms for an unforgettable urban experience as Ayala Avenue transforms into a car-free haven on September 3, 2023,” they captioned their post.
Pedestrians can freely stroll, walk their pets, jog, skate, bike, and more without having to worry about any incoming cars and the hassle of air pollution during the said period.
More details about its grand launch, rules, and more are yet to be announced.
Makati previously launched a car-free day in November 2012 to raise awareness of the health benefits of walking while at the same time promoting the use of non-motorized transport like bicycles as alternatives to using cars that use fossil fuels—one of the major sources of air pollution.
Just recently, the LGU has also launched the “fitness loop” in Ayala Triangle Gardens, where citizens can bike, walk, and exercise freely.
