Ateneo outranks UP as top PH school in latest world university rankings

Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) made its debut in the Times Higher Education (T.H.E.) World University Ranking, eclipsing the University of the Philippines (UP) as the top school in the country.

Rankings from the British higher education magazine showed that AdMU placed 351-400 in the 2023 World University Rankings, a zero to hero moment from last edition's "reporter" status. It means the university provided data to the T.H.E., but didn't meet the ranking eligibility criteria.

"We are honored and humbled to be ranked in the 351-400 bracket in our debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings," AdMU said in a Facebook post. It also changed its cover photo indicating its fresh T.H.E. ranking.

UP ranked 801-1000 this time around, from 601-800 as the leading Philippine university before.

De La Salle University retained its 1201-1500 ranking from last year.

Mapúa University entered the T.H.E.'s 2023 list with a 1501+ ranking.

The following higher education institutions in the country were listed as reporters:

• Cebu Technological University;
• Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology;
• University of Santo Tomas;
• University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines;
• Tarlac Agricultural University; and
• Visayas State University.

The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom led the ranking for the seventh consecutive year.

Harvard University in the United States remained second place, while the U.K.'s University of Cambridge jumped from joint fifth last year to joint third, alongside the U.S.' Stanford University.

The T.H.E. said it based the rankings on 13 "carefully calibrated performance indicators," gauging a university's performance in terms of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

It also analyzed over 121 million citations across over 15.5 million research publications, including survey responses from 40,000 scholars worldwide.

A total of 1,799 universities across 104 countries got rankings, while 526 universities ended up as reporters. The T.H.E. noted that its 2023 list is the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
