Former president Rodrigo Duterte seeks return as Davao mayor with his son, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, as his vice mayor.

The 79-year-old politician eyes to take over the mayoral seat from the incumbent Davao mayor, Baste, who will now seek the vice mayor post in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections.

The two filed their certificates of candidacy at the Comelec Davao District office on Monday, Oct. 7. They were accompanied by Rodrigo’s partner, Honeylet Avanceña.

This will be Rodrigo’s comeback to politics after serving as president from 2016 to 2022.

Prior to this, his eldest son, Congressman Paolo Duterte had filed his COC for reelection as the Davao City’s 1st District representative. Meanwhile, his sons, Rigo and Omar will vie for a councilor seat and representative of the 2nd district, respectively.

Rodrigo was first elected as the mayor of Davao in 1988 and ended in 1998. He secured the post anew from 2001 to 2010 and again from 2013 to 2016.

After winning his presidential bid in 2016, his daughter and incumbent vice president Sara Duterte held the post from 2016 to 2022.
