PH records over 21,000 COVID-19 cases, as nationwide total approaches 3 million

The country's COVID-19 infections hit yet another high at 21,819, according to the Department of Health (DOH)'s report on Jan. 7, in the third day of new daily cases at the five-digit mark.

The DOH's COVID-19 bulletin showed that active COVID-19 cases are already over 77,000, as the national caseload is approaching three million. The agency, however, noted that 94% of the cases are mild and asymptomatic.

Some 973 patients have overcome COVID-19, as total recoveries stood at 2.78 million.

The death toll is now above 51,800, as 129 individuals, succumbed to the disease.

Of the 70,049 tested since Jan. 5, the DOH said about 40% of them turned out positive for COVID-19.

The DOH said 10 laboratories have yet to turn in their data, though noted that all laboratories were operational on Jan. 5.

In the last 14 days, the DOH said the 10 labs with no reports just yet account for 0.8% of the samples tested and 1.5% of positive cases.

To date, the country has 43 Omicron cases on record, with Delta cases at 8,497.

The DOH, citing studies, said that one Omicron case can infect up to 10 people, as compared to Delta's 8.
